How We Started
Van Builder was founded by Asmat El Baba, and the story behind it is anything but ordinary.
In 2002, while studying Aerospace Engineering and working part-time to support himself, a teenage Asmat began building his very first mobile ice cream truck from scratch. It took nearly two years to complete, working mostly in spare moments after study and work, with limited funds and a lot of determination.
In October 2004, the truck was completed, registered with Moreland City Council, and made its debut at the ChillOut Festival. After years of long nights and hard work, seeing customers lined up at the window made it all worthwhile.
What started as a single homemade project in his parents’ front yard quickly grew by word of mouth. Family and friends saw the quality of the build and started asking Asmat to build for them too.
Over the next two decades, that quiet reputation for craftsmanship and precision grew into a full-scale operation, moving from the front yard to a factory in East Keilor, and eventually to the Van Builder workshop in Frankston today.
Asmat’s background in Aerospace Engineering is not incidental. It shapes how Van Builder approaches every build. The same discipline, precision, and attention to structural integrity that goes into aircraft design goes into every van, truck, and trailer that leaves the Van Builder workshop.
More than 20 years on, that founding mindset has never changed. For many customers, these vehicles are not just vans or trailers.
